Baja Sur Fishing Adventure: Jigs, Roosters, and Bucket-List Moments

This month, our very own Derrick from our Steveston store went south to the Baja and had some fantastic moments and insight to share with us! His trip took us deep into Baja Sur, chasing bottom fish, roosters, and unforgettable memories, all while putting some of our favourite Pacific Net and Twine–approved gear to the test.

Bottom Fishing in San Nicholas, Baja Sur

"So this was the start of our fishing trip in the Baja to San Nicholas Baja Sur - in these pics is a collection of bottom fish caught on Daiwa FK jigs in full glow and silver metallic “ all lures I’ll mention are available at PNT.. the one my buddy Baja Brad is holding is a Cabrilla snapper caught on the Daiwa FK JIg full glow , the smaller fish brads holding is the pierna “ maybe the most caught marketable white fish, the fish with the spots brownish color is the Pinto Bass - also a super easy caught white meat fish for fish tacos - the two red fish are the True Red snappers of the sea “Huacjinango” - the best of the best as far as fishermen want for best eating and most desired fish!!"

This was classic Baja bottom fishing at its finest. The Daiwa FK Jigs—especially in Full Glow and Silver Metallic—absolutely delivered. Cabrilla, Pierna, Pinto Bass, and the legendary Huachinango (True Red Snapper) all hit the deck. These are the fish people dream about for tacos, grilling, and all-around top-tier eating.

Winter Roosters on Artificial Lures? Yes.

"Ok, for us this was the super cool stuff , up next are roosters “ Pez Gallo” caught on the Nomad Madscad 150 silver green mackerel . 4/6 of the roosters were caught on this lure , and the super cool thing is myself who’s fished here for 10 years I’ve never caught a rooster period because there usually not around in the winter time. Baja Brad has never caught any roosters on a lure in like 30 years. So obviously this nomad lure works."

Roosterfish in winter? On a lure? That’s almost unheard of. Yet the Nomad Madscad 150 (Silver Green Mackerel) made it happen—four out of six roosters came on this exact lure. Proof that when the right bait meets the right conditions, magic happens.

Baja Evenings Done Right

"Later that night Chuy cut some mesquite to bbq for yellowtail heads and Cabrilla head just unbelievable good , as for Japanese that’s like the #1 thing to have obviously Mexico too, super cool experience that barely anyone does in the Baja."

This is the Baja few people get to experience—fresh mesquite fires, fish heads on the grill, and flavours you don’t forget. Huge shoutout to Chuyssportfishing for making nights like this possible.

First Rooster Ever

"And a shot of the panga we fished out of the 2nd day Elizabeth, and my very 1st rooster ever!! This was not caught on the Nomad Madscad or any other lure we carry at PNT, but that’s a bucket list fish for me. So most post this one, and it’s a beautiful nice big rooster!"

My first-ever roosterfish—a true bucket-list moment. Sometimes it’s not about the lure, it’s about the experience.

What’s Next

"We are in Lopez Mateos now as our adventure continues and going outside the Boca “mouth” to fish wahoo tuna tuna tomorrow."

The adventure rolls on—wahoo and tuna on deck next.

Gear That Made It Happen (Available at PNT)

We don’t just talk about gear—we use it. Here’s what was in rotation on this trip:

From glow jigs on the bottom to roosters crashing Madscads, this Baja trip reminded us why we do what we do. Stay tuned—there’s more offshore action coming soon.
